The Kasseler Querungsbord®-System
the solution for barrier-free crossing points
Of course accessibility is important! Though one hears and reads of it everywhere, in practice the topic often leaves a lot to be desired. Particularly in road traffic, where poor safety can have serious consequences, people restricted in their mobility come up against obstacles time and again that the fully-mobile don’t even notice.
With the Kassel Kerb®, we have made an innovative contribution to more barrier-free accessibility in road traffic, particularly in public transport, that has proven itself over and over again for many years. However, we don’t consider the issue of barrier-free accessibility settled with one once-off development; we work constantly on its improvement and on finding new solutions for old problems. We research, test and work meticulously, making safety and barrier-free accessibility in road traffic for you our top priority.
One product of our constant development is the Kasseler Querungsbord® -System. It was developed in cooperation with experienced representatives of all mobility-restricted groups. It is a barrier-free kerbstone that allows wheels to roll smoothly over it and can be clearly recognized by the blind and the visually impaired.
The Kasseler Querungsbord® system forms an important link in the barrier-free mobility-chain at the road/footpath interface.
safe & even
The Kasseler Querungsbord® allows an almost continuous kerbstone transition from footpath to road. As a “zero-drop” with a footpath and kerbstone junction height of 3 cm, the Kasseler Querungsbord® is of a height that wheels can smoothly roll over. This allows “Joe Public” to cross the street safely and easily and also enables the mobility-restricted, such as wheelchair users, parents with prams or the elderly to do the same.
Appropriate supplementary elements are also available in order to guide the blind and the visually impaired across the street safely, for example for double-crossings (see “Supplementary Elements”). At a width of 90-100 cm the Kasseler Querungsbord® is wide enough to allow people using walking aids with wheels to cross the road safely and easily, yet not so wide that the blind would encounter problems resulting from a long stretch of missing kerbstone edge.

Meaningful Supplements
The Kasseler Querungsbord® should absolutely be supplemented by the Kassel Scale Slab with an asymmetrical profile. It is laid directly in front of the crossing kerbstone, parallel to the kerb, ideally at a depth of 60 cm, and its special surface structure serves as a warning surface for the blind and visually impaired.
With a ridge interval of 38 mm and a ridge height of 4.5 mm, the Kassel Scale Slab imparts clear tactile signals to the blind and visually impaired from the left/right pendulum movement of their white canes. The asymmetric profile of the ridges (similar to scaling) allows it to convey different signals depending on the direction from which the visually impaired person approaches: when approaching the road from the footpath it stops the white cane and thus the person, when approaching the footpath from the road it is easily recognized but is not obstructive.
Double crossings could be installed as the optimal solution, barrier-free in every respect. With the use of the Kasseler Querungsbord® they allow a safe crossing for people with walking aids with wheels; the Kassel Scale Slab warning surface draws the attention of the blind and visually-impaired to the zero-drop crossing and the Kassel Guiding Plate for the Blind, guides them to a safe crossing with a 4-6 cm high kerbstone.
We would be happy to tell you about various example applications or demonstrate the system to you “live” in our test area or with the use of reference installations.
